Marshall House Bed and Breakfast

A place with a view in the mountains

If you can imagine the quaint town of Marshall, located on the banks of the beautiful French Broad River with the timeless Appalachian Mountains, you have a picture of the view from the 50-foot veranda of the Marshall House.

In 1903 James H. White had Richard Sharp Smith build the house for he and his new bride. The house is a grand example of Greek Revival architecture. Originally called “A Cottage,” it is constructed of Pebbledash a technique Smith brought from England.
It had five bed chambers with multiple rooms for entertaining and dining. Special features include a large accordion door.
Pocket doors close off the formal dining room and parlor. There are four non working fireplaces, all with a different motif.
The covered drive through, known as a porte-cochere under which a horse and carriage may enter to discharge their passengers, leads to an entrance room with a distinctive stone fireplace.

In 1923 Robert and Maude Ramsey purchased the house. He made major changes needing more rooms for his larger family. He increased bedrooms by dividing existing rooms. Two rooms were built over the flat roof kitchen. A third floor was added with two additional rooms.

1940 saw another change when James and Bessie Lee Penland purchased the house. Bessie Lee named it the Balsam Tourist Home. In 1978 Bessie was unable to continue and the house was rented. The new manager changed the name to the Marshall House.

In 1988 I purchased the home from the Penland Family keeping the name synonymous to the town. Today the house has 19 rooms. 8 bedrooms on the second floor, one bedroom on the main floor and 2 bedrooms on the third floor. and a total of five bathrooms.

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places known as the "James H. White," house.
